Housewarming party
A housewarming party is when someone moves into a new residence. This is a way for the person(s) to show their new home to their friends. This is celebrated informally amongst friends and family. A gift is usually given to help “warm” their house to make it a home.
Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is a day of thanks for all that is given to us and all we have achieved. This is a holiday where families celebrate together and give thanks. Thanksgiving falls on the last Thursday of every November. Since it considered fall time, decorations for Thanksgiving are typically fall colors.
Anniversary
An anniversary is a milestone in a couple’s relationship. Anniversaries are typically celebrated on a yearly basis. However some couples, particularly newlyweds, may celebrate on a monthly basis. The couples show their love to each other by giving each other a gift and/or a card.
Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate love and the one you love. It falls on February 14th every year. This is a day of giving to your loved one to show how much you appreciate them. It is usually celebrated with flowers, chocolate and cards.
Graduation
Graduation is a celebration when someone achieves an educational goal. Typical graduations include someone completing high school and receiving a diploma or completing college and achieving a degree. Since this is a milestone in someone’s life, there is often an informal celebration with family and friends. Gifts are given as congratulations for the achievement in that person’s life.
New Year
New Year is celebrated different times for different cultures; however the meaning is the same. It is to welcome in a New Year and say goodbye to the previous year. In the United States, it is celebrated by staying up until midnight on New Year’s Eve and ringing in the New Year at the exact time it occurs.
Christmas
Christmas is the celebration of the birth of God’s son, Jesus. It portrays what he did and how he helped many in many ways. Christmas is always celebrated on the 25th of December. Many families celebrate on the evening before, Christmas Eve. Christmas is typically celebrated with gifts and family gatherings.
Birthday
A birthday is a celebration of the day a person came into this world. This is celebrated once a year on the day of the person’s birth. There are typically parties and celebrations with gifts given to the person of honor.
Baby shower
A baby shower is a celebration of a new baby being born into the world. Typically a baby shower is given for the mother to be, prior to the baby being born. The celebration will usually include games and gifts that are for the baby. This helps the parents to be with the expenses that are associated with the birth of a child.
Father’s Day
Father’s Day is a celebration of someone’s father. They are “thanking” them for their fatherhood and all they have done to raise their children. Father’s Day is celebrated every year on the third Sunday in June. Children show their appreciation for their fathers by giving a gift.
Mother’s Day
Mother’s day is a celebration of motherhood and all that mothers have done for their children. This is celebrated in different forms around the world. Here we celebrate on the second Sunday in May and it is a day to give our mothers gifts, flowers, and cards.
Bar/Bat Mitzvah
A Bar Mitzvah is a religious ceremony in which a Jewish boy reaches “manhood” and is responsible for his own actions. This occurs when he reaches the age of 13. There is a large celebration with family and friends, and includes gift giving. A Bat Mitzvah is the same ceremony but for a girl. This is when a girl reaches adulthood under Jewish law. Whereas the boys must reach the age of 13, for a girl it is 12.
Wedding
A wedding is a celebration of a couple’s love. This is where they commit to be together and faithful to each other for the rest of their lives. There is usually a large celebration with family members and friends. The couple is also given gifts to begin their new lives together.
Wedding Shower
A wedding shower is given when a couple decides to get married. This is given prior to the actual wedding and usually only for the bride to be. It is typically an informal celebration amongst female friends and family. Gifts are often given, however they are different from wedding gifts as they are geared towards the female getting married, not them as a couple.
